Mauna Loa, is also know as "Long Mountain”, is located on the island of Hawaii. It is above rising 13,680 ft. (4,170 m) above sea level. Since 1832, Mauna Loa has erupted 39 times; its last eruption was in 1984. Mauna Loa covers more than 50 percent of Hawaii Island. Mauna Loa is the world’s largest active volcano. It is believed that Mauna Loa has been erupting for 700,000 years or more, emerging from under the sea approximately 400,000 years ago. Mauna Loa is considered to be in the shield stage.
